Paper Recycling

You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 30-41 which are based on the Reading Passage below.

PAPER RECYCLING

A Paper is different from other waste produce because it comes from a sustainable resource: trees. Unlike the minerals and oil used to make plastics and metals, trees are replaceable. Paper is also biodegradable, so it does not pose as much threat to the environment when it is discarded. While 45 out of every 100 tonnes of wood fibre used to make paper in Australia comes from waste paper, the rest comes directly from virgin fibre from forests and plantations. By world standards, this is a good performance since the worldwide average is 33 percent waste paper. Governments have encouraged waste paper collection and sorting schemes and at the same time, the paper industry has responded by developing new recycling technologies that have paved the way for even greater utilization of used fibre. As a result, industry’s use of recycled fibres is expected to increase at twice the rate of virgin fibre over the coming years.

B Already, waste paper constitutes 70% of paper used for packaging and advances in the technology required to remove ink from the paper have allowed a higher recycled content in newsprint and writing paper. To achieve the benefits of recycling, the community must also contribute. We need to accept a change in the quality of paper products; for example, stationery may be less white and of a rougher texture. There also needs to support from the community for waste paper collection programs. Not only do we need to make the paper available to collectors but it also needs to be separated into different types and sorted from contaminants such as staples, paperclips, string and other miscellaneous items.

C There are technical limitations to the amount of paper which can be recycled and some paper products cannot be collected for re-use. These include paper in the form of books and permanent records, photographic paper and paper which is badly contaminated. The four most common sources of paper for recycling are factories and retail stores which gather large amounts of packaging material in which goods are delivered, also offices which have unwanted business documents and computer output, paper converters and printers and lastly households which discard newspapers and packaging material. The paper manufacturer pays a price for the paper and may also incur the collection cost.

D Once collected, the paper has to be sorted by hand by people trained to recognise various types of paper. This is necessary because some types of paper can only be made from particular kinds of recycled fibre. The sorted paper then has to be repulped or mixed with water and broken down into its individual fibres. This mixture is called stock and may contain a wide variety of contaminating materials, particularly if it is made from mixed waste paper which has had little sorting. Various machineries are used to remove other materials from the stock. After passing through the repulping process, the fibres from printed waste paper are grey in colour because the printing ink has soaked into the individual fibres. This recycled material can only be used in products where the grey colour does not matter, such as cardboard boxes but if the grey colour is not acceptable, the fibres must be de-inked. This involves adding chemicals such as caustic soda or other alkalis, soaps and detergents, water-hardening agents such as calcium chloride, frothing agents and bleaching agents. Before the recycled fibres can be made into paper they must be refined or treated in such a way that they bond together.

E Most paper products must contain some virgin fibre as well as recycled fibres and unlike glass, paper cannot be recycled indefinitely. Most paper is down-cycled which means that a product made from recycled paper is of an inferior quality to the original paper. Recycling paper is beneficial in that it saves some of the energy, labour and capital that go into producing virgin pulp. However, recycling requires the use of fossil fuel, a non-renewable energy source, to collect the waste paper from the community and to process it to produce new paper. And the recycling process still creates emissions which require treatment before they can be disposed of safely. Nevertheless, paper recycling is an important economical and environmental practice but one which must be carried out in a rational and viable manner for it to be useful to both industry and the community.

Kinetic energy is the energy of moving particles.

Typhoons are cyclones, storms with strong winds rotating around a low-pressure center. 在这种解释中定义句的谓语动词多为:be, mean, deal with, be considered, to be, refer to, be called, be known as, define, represent, signify, constitute等。

Experts in kinesics, in their study of body motion as related to speech ,hope to discover new methods of communications.

另外同位语前还常有or, similarly, that is to say, in other words, namely, or other, 等副词或短语出现。 Obesity, which is a medical disorder that affects approximately 20-30% of the population of the United States of America. It is an excessive accumulation of body fat that results from the storage of excess food energy calories in the body's fat cells.

根据生词obesity后面的非限制性定语从句which is a medical disorder that affects approximately 20-30% of the population of the United States of America. It is an excessive accumulation of body fat that results from the storage of excess food energy calories in the body's fat cells.

The consequences of epochal events such as wars and great scientific discoveries are not confined to a small geographical area as they were in the past.

Computers have been used for most kinds of crime, including fraud theft, larceny, embezzlement, burglary, sabotage, murder and forgery, since the first cases were reported in 1985.

Goran Ivanisevic fears only one service in tennis -- Michael Stichs. His toss is always the same: the straight one or the topspin. Sampras has a good serve and Becker too, but Stichs is the toughest to read.

In Tarkovsky’s opinion, the attraction of the cinema is that it

A aims to impress its audience.

B tells stories better than books.

C illustrates the passing of time.

D describes familiar events.

The frightened audience could not accept that they were watching a mere picture. Pictures were still, only reality moved; this must, therefore, be reality. In their confusion, they feared that a real train was about to crush them. The key to that magic was the way in which cinema created a dynamic image of the real flow of events. A still picture could only imply the existence of time, while time in a novel passed at the whim of the reader. But in cinema, the real, objective flow of time was captured.

A recent survey found that in British secondary schools,

A there was more bullying than had previously been the case.

B there was less bullying than in primary schools.

C cases of persistent bullying were very common.

D indirect forms of bullying were particularly difficult to deal with.

There was less bullying in secondary schools, with about one in twenty-five suffering persistent bullying. very common和one in twenty-five的比例是明显不符的。

Genetically-modified organisms(GMOs)are a double-edged sword(双刃剑)。

这些常用的有:although,though,while,on the other hand,however,rather,but,despite,in spite of等。

解释原因的:because,because of,due to,result from,as a result of,be a consequence of,be attributed to;表示结果的:as a result,result in,lead to,cause,contributed to.

一、雅思阅读看到all, only, must, every等绝对词就选F

题目1:Cities with high levels of bicycle usage can be efficient even when public transport is only averagely good.

原文:Bicycle use was not included in the study but Newman noted that the two most “bicycle friendly” cities considered-Amsterdam and Copenhagen-were very efficient, even though their public transport systems were “reasonable but not special”.

2:The trees from which quinine is derived grow only in South America.

原文:At the time, quinine was the only viable medical treatment for malaria. The drug is derived from the bark of the cinchona tree, native to South America and by 1856 demand for the drug was surpassing the available supply.

Tourism contributes over six per cent of the Australian gross national product.

原文:This industry is the world’s leading industrial contributor, producing over 6 per cent of the world’s gross national product and accounting for capital investment in excess of $422 billion in direct, indirect and personal taxes each year.

Private schools in Japan are more modern and spacious than state-run lower secondary schools.

Lower secondary schools in Japan cover three school years, from the seventh grade(age 13) to the ninth grade(age 15). Virtually all pupils at this stage attend state schools: only 3 per cent are in the private sector. Schools are usually modern in design, set well back from the road and spacious inside.

The Pearl

The Pearl

A

Throughout history, pearls have held a unique presence within the wealthy

and powerful. For instance, the pearl was the favored gem of the wealthy

during the Roman Empire. This gift from the sea had been brought back from

the orient by the Roman conquests. Roman women wore pearls to bed so

they could be reminded of their wealth immediately upon waking up. Before

jewelers learned to cut gems, the pearl was of greater value than the diamond.

In the Orient and Persia Empire, pearls were ground into powders to cure

anything from heart disease to epilepsy, with possible aphrodisiac uses as well.

Pearls were once considered an exclusive privilege for royalty. A law in 1612

drawn up by the Duke of Saxony prohibited the wearing of pearls by nobility,

professors, doctors or their wives in an effort to further distinguish royal

appearance. American Indians also used freshwater pearls from the Mississippi

River as decorations and jewelry.

B

There are essentially three types of pearls: natural, cultured and imitation. A

natural pearl (often called an Oriental pearl) forms when an irritant, such as

a piece of sand, works its way into a particular species of oyster, mussel, or

clam. As a defense mechanism, the mollusk secretes a fluid to coat the irritant.

Layer upon layer of this coating is deposited on the irritant until a lustrous

pearl is formed.

C

The only difference natural pearls and cultured pearls is that the irritant is

a surgically implanted bead or piece of shell called Mother of Pearl. Often,

these shells are ground oyster shells that are worth

significant amounts of money in their own right as

irritant-catalysts for quality pearls. The resulting

core is, much larger than in a natural pearl. Yet,

as long as there are enough layers of nacre (the

secreted fluid covering the irritant) to result in a

beautiful, gem-quality pearl, the size of the nucleus

is of no consequence to beauty or durability.

D

Pearls can come from either salt or freshwater sources. Typically, saltwater

pearls tend to be higher quality, although there are several types of freshwater

pearls that are considered high in quality as well. Freshwater pearls tend to

be very irregular in shape, with a puffed rice appearance the most prevalent.

Nevertheless, it is each individual pearls merits that determines value more

than the source of the pearl. Saltwater pearl oysters are usually cultivated in

protected lagoons or volcanic atolls. However, most freshwater cultured pearls

sold today come from China. Cultured pearls are the response of the shell to a

tissue implant. A tiny piece of mantle tissue from a donor shell is transplanted

into a recipient shell. This graft will form a pearl sac and the tissue will

precipitate calcium carbonate into this pocket. There are a number of options

for producing cultured pearls: use freshwater or seawater shells, transplant

the graft into the mantle or into the gonad, add a spherical bead or do it nonbeaded.

The majority of saltwater cultured pearls are grown with beads.

E

Regardless of the method used to acquire a pearl, the process usually takes

several years. Mussels must reach a mature age, which can take up t0 3 years,

and then be implanted or naturally receive an irritant. Once the irritant is

in place, it can take up to another 3 years for the pearl to reach its full size.

Often, the irritant may be rejected, the pearl will be terrifically misshapen, or

the oyster may simply die from disease or

countless other complications. By the end

of a 5 t0 10 year cycle, only 50% of the

oysters will have survived. And of the pearls

produced, only approximately 5% are of

substantial quality for top jewelry makers.

From the outset, a pearl fanner can figure

on spending over $100 for every oyster

that is farmed, of which many will produce

nothing or die.

F

Imitation pearls are a different story

altogether. In most cases, a glass bead is

dipped into a solution made from fish

scales. This coating is thin and may

eventually wear off. One can usually

tell an imitation by biting on it. Fake

pearls glide across your teeth, while the

layers of nacre on real pearls feel gritty.

The Island of Mallorca (in Spain) is known for its imitation pearl industry.

Quality natural pearls are very rare jewels. The actual value of a natural pearl

is determined in the same way as it would be for other “precious” gems.

The valuation factors include size, shape, color, quality of surface, orient

and luster. In general, cultured pearls are less valuable than natural pearls,

whereas imitation pearls almost have no value. One way that jewelers can

determine whether a pearl is cultured or natural is to have a gem lab perform

an x-ray of the pearl. If the x-ray reveals a nucleus, the pearl is likely a beadnucleated

saltwater pearl. If no nucleus is present, but irregular and small dark

inner spots indicating a cavity are visible, combined with concentric rings of

organic substance, the pearl is likely a cultured freshwater. Cultured freshwater

pearls can often be confused for natural pearls which present as homogeneous

pictures which continuously darken toward the surface of the pearl. Natural

pearls will often show larger cavities where organic matter has dried out and

decomposed. Although imitation pearls look the part, they do not have the

same weight or smoothness as real pearls, and their luster will also dim greatly.

Among cultured pearls, Akoya pearls from Japan are some of the most lustrous.

A good quality necklace of 40 Akoya pearls measuring 7mm in diameter sells

for about $1,500, while a super- high quality strand sells for about $4,500. Size

on the other hand, has to do with the age of the oyster that created the pearl (the

more mature oysters produce larger pearls) and the location in which the pearl

was cultured. The South Sea waters of Australia tend to produce the larger

pearls; probably because the water along the coast line is supplied with rich

nutrients from the ocean floor. Also, the type of mussel common to the area

seems to possess a predilection for producing comparatively large pearls.

G

Historically, the world’s best pearls came from the Persian Gulf, especially

around what is now Bahrain. The pearls of the Persian Gulf were natural

created and collected by breath-hold divers. The secret to the special luster of

Gulf pearls probably derived from the unique mixture of sweet and salt water

around the island. Unfortunately, the natural pearl industry of the Persian Gulf

ended abruptly in the early 1930’s with the discovery of large deposits of

oil. Those who once dove for pearls sought prosperity in the economic boom

ushered in by the oil industry. The water pollution resulting from spilled oil

and indiscriminate over-fishing of oysters essentially ruined the once pristine

pearl producing waters of the Gulf. Today, pearl diving is practiced only as

a hobby. Still, Bahrain remains one of the foremost trading centers for high

quality pearls. In fact, cultured pearls are banned from the Bahrain pearl

market, in an effort to preserve the location’s heritage. Nowadays, the largest

stock of natural pearls probably resides in India. Ironically, much of India’s

stock of natural pearls came originally from Bahrain. Unlike Bahrain, which

has essentially lost its pearl resource, traditional pearl fishing is still practiced

on a small scale in India.

比如剑桥6的67页的list of headings 的 key point 2 的首句中managers should ensure that all employees have specific goals and receive comments on how well they are doing in those goals. 与之相对应的答案是establish targets and give feedback 同意词组为:have specific goals等于establish targets, receive comments on how well they are doing in those goals等于give feedback。

10. Cities with high level of bicycles usage can be efficient even when public transport is only averagely good. 对应于原文中two most ‘bicycle friend’ cities considered—Amsterdam and Copenhagen—were very efficient, even though their public transport systems were ‘ reasonable but special.

Nerves linked to their_______are underdeveloped.

原文:Similarly, although at least some cetaceans have taste buds, the nerves serving these have degenerated or are rudimentary.

In the follow-up class, the teaching activities are similar to those used in conventional classes.

原文:Some hours after the two-part session, there is a follow-up class at which the students are stimulated to recall the material presented. Once again the approach is inderect. The students do not focus their attention on trying to remember the vocabulary, but focus on using the language to communicate (e.g. through games or improvised dramatizations). Such methods are not unusual in language teaching.

International trade is increasing at a great rate than the world economy.”

原文:“International trade is growing at a startling pace. While the global economy has been expanding at a bit over 3% a year, the volume of trade has been rising at a compound annual rate of about twice that.”

As a result, factors such as family wealth and attitudes to children have been eliminated, and it has been shown that maternal literacy can in itself improve infant health and survival.

原文:“most literate women learnt to read in primary school, and the fact that a woman has had an education may simply indicate her family’s wealth or that it values its children more highly. Now a long-term study carried out in Nicaragua has eliminated these factors by showing that teaching reading to poor adult women, who would otherwise have remained illiterate, has a direct effect on their children’s health and survival.”

雅思阅读原文中的“these”明显代指题目中的“factors such as family wealth and attitudes to children have been eliminated”。

Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor and industrialist, was a man of many contrasts. He was the son of abankrupt, but became a millionaire;a scientist with alove ofliterature,an industrialist who managed to remain an idealist. He made a fortune but lived a very simple life, and although cheerful in company he was often sad in private.A lover of mankind, he never had a wife or family to love him;a patriotic①son of his native land,he died alone on foreign soil.He invented a new explosive,dynamite②,to improve the peacetime industries of mining and road building, but saw it was used as a weapon of war to kill and injure his fellow men.During his useful life he often felt he was useless:“Alfred Nobel,”he once wrote of himself,“ought to have been put to death by a kind doctor as soon as,with a cry,he entered life.”World-famous for his works he was never personally well known, for throughout his life he avoided publicity.“I do not see,” he once said,“that I have deserved any fame and I have no taste for it,”but since his death his name has brought fame and glory to others.

He was born in Stockholm on October 21,1833but moved to Russia with his parents in 1842,where his father,Immanuel, made a strong position for himself in the engineering industry.Immanuel Nobel invented the landmine and made a lot of money from government orders for it during the Crimean War,but went bankrupt soon after. Most of the family returned to Sweden in 1859,where Alfred rejoined them in 1863,beginning his own study of explosives in his father's laboratory. He had never been to school or university but had studied privately. And by the time he was twenty,he was a skillful chemist and excellent linguist, speaking Swedish,Russian,German, French and English.Like his father,Alfred Nobelwas imaginative and inventive, but he had better luck in business and showed more financialsense. He was quick to see industrial openings for his scientificinventions and built up over 80companies in 20different coun- tries.Indeed his greatness lay in his outstanding ability to combine the qualities ofan original scientist with those of a forward-looking industrialist.

But Nobel's main concern was never with making money or even with making scientific discoveries.Seldom happy,he was always searching for a meaning to life, and from his youth had taken aserious interest in literature and philosophy.Perhaps he could not find ordinary human love—he never married—he came to care deeply about the whole of mankind. He was always generous to the poor:“I'd rather take care of the stomachs of the living than the glory of the dead in the form ofstone materials,”he once said. His greatest wish, however, was to see an end to wars, and thus peace betweennations, and he spent much time and money working for this cause untilhis death in Italy in 1896.His famous will,in which he left money to provide prizesfor outstanding work in Physics,Chemistry,Physiology,Medicine, Literature and Peace,is a memorial to his interests and ideals. And so,the man who felt he should have died at birth is remembered and respected long after his death.

雅思阅读题型之Y/N/NG 和T/F/NG

⑴ 首先应该确认到底是Y/N/NG还是T/F/NG!

⑵要注意Y/N/NG与T/F/NG的区别。

But, However, Although, Though等!

Table

Short-answer

◆ no more than two/three/four words(不超过2/3/4 个字);

◆ one or two words(一个或两个字);

◆ use a maximum of two words(最多两个字)。

原文:…… if your iron produces droplets of water instead of giving off steam, your temperature control is set too low.

题目:What should you do if our iron starts to drip water?

最好的答案是根据your temperature control is set too low 改为set temperature high/higher。同样正确的答案为:increase the temperature 或turn up temperature。
